Solid Business Program

The Solid Business Program is designed to deliver business training, advice and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses who are looking to develop and grow their opportunities. While the program is open to all Indigenous business owners, there will be some focus on growing your business through a range of mechanisms including procurement so established businesses are strongly encouraged to apply.

Focus regions

This program will focus on the North Queensland regions of Burdekin Shire and the Whitsundays, Mackay and the Cassowary Coast.

Eligibility

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned; and
  • Based in Queensland.

Who should attend?

  • Indigenous businesses: Business owners, employees, partners in an Indigenous business based in Queensland who wish to develop their business growth opportunities.
  • Indigenous community organisations: Board members and senior staff are invited to participate to develop an understanding of business opportunities, including tender writing.

The program

The program consists of:

  • Access to a series of workshops
  • 1:1 coaching mentoring for the eligible businesses
  • Business Health Check Assessment
  • Procurement Health Check Assessment
  • Digital Health Check Assessment
  • How to Pitch your Business
  • Full day expo to exhibit business including pitching

Program Objectives

At the end of the Program participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of
    • business planning,
    • business systems needed to manage growth,
    • opportunity assessment,
    • tendering and quotes; and
    • utilising digital technologies
  2. Have a clear understanding of government standards and procurement processes plus a clear pathway of the next steps they need to take to become a Local and State Government supplier.
  3. Be equipped with practical, usable and transferable tools, systems and frameworks to help assess, manage and grow their business.

Specific Business Outcomes

The Small Business Growth Program focuses on equipping businesses with the key skills, knowledge, and systems to grow their business to the next level including the development of and/or access to:

  • A Business Plan (short-term and medium-term business strategy)
  • Digital literacy including digital security, social media and a range of cloud computing solutions
  • A Business Capability Statement and /or Company Profile
  • Business case studies, testimonials, and references
  • Opportunity selection (go/no go tool) and basic due diligence processes
  • Advice on key business systems and documentation (e.g. WHS system, HR, IT and Recordkeeping).
