ISLPR Test and Placement Test Registration

WHAT IS ISLPR?

International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) is an English test taken by those who want to gain entry into formal courses at TAFE Queensland*. The test takes about 2 hours for all four skill areas and is often done in the following order.

* Please note ISLPR is not an accepted English Language Test for entry into HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing (092022K).

  1. SPEAKING (APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES)

The first part of the interview consists of introductory questions on familiar topics such as your family, hometown etc. The second part of the interview involves the use of more complex language skills for example giving an opinion on a particular issue.

  1. LISTENING (APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES)

The listening test usually comprises of 2-4 items. These items are authentic or “real” texts and could include phone messages or conversations, advertisements, radio news or weather reports, short lectures and talk-back radio programs. The first listening item is usually the easiest and with each text the degree of difficulty increases.

  1. READING (APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES)

The reading test usually comprises of 2-4 texts. As with the listening these texts are authentic or “real” texts and could include advertisements, brochures, recipes, feature articles, newspaper articles, notices, letters/emails and journal articles. Again, just like the listening test the first text should be the easiest one and with each text the degree of difficulty increases.

  1. WRITING (1 HOUR)

In the writing test you will be required to write approximately 400 words in total. You will be given two tasks to write, one task is usually about some general aspect of your life and the other task requires you to give your opinion or discuss an issue. The choice of topic is usually based on your interests and/or profession. The types of tasks you could be given include: personal letter/email, formal letter/ email, a description e.g. recipe etc.), a feature article, a personal statement and/or an essay.
