This skill set may be useful across a number of industries including community services and health care. Palliative care ensures patients are kept comfortable and maintain a good quality of life while living with a terminal illness and/or in the final stages of life. In this skill set you will learn how to deliver care services using a palliative approach as well as how to provide loss and grief support to families and loved ones. Successful completion of this skill set will give you a foundation for further study and may expand your job prospects in the health and community services sectors.

Funding for the Palliative Approach Skill Set (CHCSS00105) is available for eligible NSW resident school leavers, young people and job seekers as part of the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled (update - No.161) initiative. This means this skillset is free* for eligible participants, there has never been a better time to upskill! 

Eligible participants must be enrolled by 30 June 2022, units of work must be completed by 21 October 2022.


This course is delivered self-paced and online with weekly virtual/ live  Zoom sessions that are recorded for viewing at a later time. The successful achievement of this skills set requires you to complete the all units listed below.

  • CHCCCS017 Provide loss and grief support
  • CHCPAL001 Deliver care services using a palliative approach

Eligibility
Under NSW JobTrainer, you may be able to study a fee-free* course if you; 

Meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria
  • Living or working in NSW and;
  • An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen
And be one (or more) of the following;
  • No longer at school
  • Job seeker. This includes someone who is unemployed, on income support payments or expected to become unemployed.
  • Young person (including school leaver) aged 16-24, regardless of employment status
  • NSW veteran and their recognised partner or spouse
  • Any individual (including an employed person) seeking fee-free* training in specific full and part qualifications in:
    aged care, childcare, disability care digital skills or Training and Assessment (TAE).
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria
While there are no selection criteria for entry to this course, it is recommended that you have sound literacy and numeracy skills.

Resources Required
It is a requirement that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.
